Crime keeps forensic document expert busy — and he likes it that way

CHESTERFIELD — When William Storer and his wife say grace before meals, they count their blessings — for their children, health and food on the table — and then show gratitude for something less obvious.

“We always say, ‘Thanks for the forgers,’” said Storer, 77, a forensic document examiner and, perhaps, the dean of the region’s expert witnesses at civil and criminal trials.

J.D. Evans, the first assistant prosecuting attorney for St. Louis County, said Storer had been the area’s foremost handwriting expert for decades. Defense attorneys who have hired Storer praise his independence, and those who have cross-examined him curse his unflappable presence in the witness box. Read the rest of this entry »
